This past weekend 24 vintage cars kicked off the vintage racing season at the Harvey West Memorial races at Brainerd International Raceway. As always the field included an eclectic mix of cars ranging from a 1959 BMW Huffaker Formula Junior to a 1969 BMW 2002 to a 1970 Boss 302 Mustang --- and a whole lot of variety in between.
The weather can always be hit or miss in Brainerd over Memorial Weekend, however Saturday the racing conditions couldn't have been better with partly cloudy skies and a high near 70 degrees. 22 cars took the green flag during the race on Saturday. Brian Kennedy easily lead from flag to flag in his 1970 Mustang, but there was a lot of racing action amongst the cars behind him. Ben Robertaccio in his 1970 Porsche 914-6, Kent Burg in his 1970 Corvette, Rich Stadther in his 1970 Dulon Formula Ford, Erik Dieterle in his 1969 BMW 2002 and Darwin Bosell in his 1971 Corvette all swapped spots multiple times in exciting battles for position.
This past weekend Eileen, Jessica and Scott made their race debut at the 2017 Gingerman Spring Brake Driver School and race weekend. Congrats on successfully completing the school and your first official vintage race weekend. We look forward to seeing you all at future vintage race weekends.
What a great VSCR banquet! About 65 members, spouses and friends gathered at Crooners Lounge & Supper Club on January 28. A cocktail hour and dinner with animated conversation and elegant background piano were followed by remarkable stories from guest speaker Tim Parker’s adventurous car-filled life and career.
Eleven members joined or renewed their memberships at the banquet. Among them were Dan Iberg and Mike Boulka, BBQ kings of BIR, who have enthusiastically donated their time and talent to grill at our Friday evening track dinners. We welcome to the club Eileen and Gary Wetzel who were in attendance. Eileen is at the Bondurant School in Arizona as of this writing, earning her license to race her beautiful Austin Healey.
A tremendous thank you goes to Dick Wallrich, VSCR vice president, who planned this year’s banquet. His big effort resulted in a delightful evening.
Otness and Jeremiah Altermatt graduated from the school and competed in the feature race on Sunday May 1st. Both Friday and Saturday were completed with barbecue served at the track. VSCDA should be applauded for serving Bells Oberon craft beer at the after party.
Saturday qualifying was very cold and wet. Randy Byboth won a special Sprite/Midget race on a damp track in the morning, and the afternoon races all ran in wonderful dry after a weekend of rain.
Rich Stadther had a misfire and Brian Kennedy had a shifter problem but everyone else enjoyed trouble free and incident free racing.
There will be vintage racing at Brainerd International Raceway Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. Come up and enjoy the action. Join the local Vintage Sports Car Racing/SCCA racers for a BBQ dinner on Friday evening.
